TO IMPROVE THE ABILITY OF SKETCHING GRAPHS OF CUBIC FUNCTIONS AMONG FORM FIVE STUDENTS
BY USING “NASA”

REFLECTION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

The Mathematics Curriculum is arranged in such a way so as to give flexibility to teachers to implement an enjoyable, meaningful, useful and challenging teaching and learning environment. At the same time, it is important to ensure that students show progression in acquiring the mathematical concepts and skills. So, as the Mathematics teacher, I have to comply the curriculum specifications which have been given to all teachers to follow with. However, since 1996 when I started teaching Mathematics until now I still cannot understand why my students, especially with the low ability in Mathematics, cannot  sketch the graph of cubic functions as well as quadratic functions. I started to think about it. Then, thanks to Allah who has gives me ideas on how to sketch graphs of cubic functions within two minutes per question. Although it looks like a simple approach it can still  help students in the learning process during in my classroom activities. My students are also interest and they enjoy  my “NASA”.

2. THE PROBLEM STATEMENTS
  • Why students are not confident with sketching the graphs of cubic functions?
  • What are the impacts on the skills due to the negative attitude towards sketching the graphs of cubic functions?
  • No suitable approach to the targeted students to attract their interest and motivate them to sketch graphs.

3. OBJECTIVES

           i) General objectives:

To have the ability of sketching the graphs of cubic functions.
To encourage students to sketch the graphs of cubic functions easily using NASA.

           ii)Specific objectives:

THE SUBJECT OF THE STUDY

The subject of this study is a group consisting 21 students of form 5 PERDANA with low ability in sketching the cubic function graph, who indirectly contributes in the total marks achieved in their Mathematics papers. Their results in previous examination for PMR shows that most of them have achieved  Cs and Ds and most of them also fail in  their final papers in Form Four Mathematics Exam.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->5.0       <!--[endif]-->SUGGESTED APPROACH

The researchers  will use “NASA” which involve three steps of action;

5.1 Observation (Unstructured)

This action research is based on the unstructured observation during the teaching and learning process in class.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->5.2       <!--[endif]-->Pre-test

In previous lessons the determined teacher found that most of the students are lost when  sketching the cubic graphs. By using these graphs of function y = ax <!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--> + c given, students cannot remember which shape is for a <!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->0 and which shape is for a <!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->0. Some of them also  cannot compare and contrast both shapes of cubic graphs as fast as possible and a few of them tried to sketch a graph from bottom to top instead of vice versa.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->5.3       <!--[endif]-->Post-test

Post-test will be held to determine the effectiveness of Neck-Arm-Shoulder-Approach “NASA” in helping students sketch the cubic graphs within two minutes per question.

Hopefully with this action research ,its approach will improve the ability of students to sketch graphs of cubic function within two minutes per question. It is also can help students draw a graph of cubic function accurately and confidently. Finally, it is hope that the action research can be used as a guideline for Mathematics teachers in teaching of  cubic functions graphs.
